Kwale, Kenya

Overview

During your stay you will be based at Camp Kenya. Established for several years now and comprising a range of camps either co-located with rural communities in the bush; on the beach; in areas chosen for their importance in wildlife conservation; on safari or preparing for mountain treks. It welcomes hundreds of volunteers each year to assist in projects and stay at the camps. The Head Quarters for all of its East Africa operations is located 50 km south of Mombasa, along with most of their camps. Makongeni, Muhaka and Mukurumuji camps are all community camps based within small rural communities nestled in the bush. Within any of these locations you will witness real African community life happening around you day by day. Don't expect to see any tourists in the village; this is your chance to realise your African dreams. These Camps are anywhere between 4 - 25km away from the Indian Ocean making these fantastic beach and bush locations.

Dive Centre

The dive centre is the most dynamic and fastest growing dive operator with some of the most experienced & qualified crew in the whole of Kenya. The dive boats depart daily and, in a short time, reach some of the best dive sites Kenya has to offer. When the sea conditions are calm,
the centre offers both morning and afternoon dives so you can make the most of the Indian Ocean during your stay.

The dive centre is equipped with brand new dive gear from Aqualung & Seemann Sub, 1 speed boat & 3 small dive boats , the latest O2 – equipment & VHF marine radios, mobile phones, sonar, life-jackets, first aid… to ensure maximum safety. In addition, they are in a close relationship with the Kenya Navy recompression chamber in Mombasa.

Accommodation

During your stay you will be based at a number of camps and lodges. Accommodation within these varies from hard build 'bandas' and large dome tents through to classic safari tents depending on your location. The camps generally incorporate trees and are surrounded by a wooden Boma (fence). There are open air mess areas and kitchens with roofing made from palm fronds, known locally as Makuti (ma-koo-tee) and some even have an in-camp bar constructed by precious volunteers. Keep a good eye on your things as the monkeys do have expensive tastes and a bit of a thing for chef's lasagne.

Special attention has been made for the environmental and climate considerations and tents are fully netted to reduce the chances of you sharing the night with mosquito's or any unwanted insects and where we have hard-build, individual mosquito nets are provided. No need to worry about snakes or spiders as long as you keep the zips closed when you are out! There are three types of tents for 2, 4 and 6 people that accommodate single sex groups.

The water for washing is readily available and as such showers are available every day, just don't necessarily count on a hot one! You will be pleased to hear that the toilets are NOT just a hole in the floor! Just like at home, complete with seat and flush and linked to an environmentally friendly soak away.

A mixture of solar power and generator provides power for the camp and there are British, 3 pin sockets in camp for you to power and charge your electric items and batteries. Please, no hairdryers or play station!

Community Projects

The Bahamas are known for their blue holes, extraordinarily deep inland sea pools fed by the ocean via natural underground passages. These breathtaking pools, caves, and tunnels offer endless discovery and challenge for even the most experienced diver. Caution should be exercised when exploring the blue holes, as they can become dangerous vortices when the tides are strong. The safest way for most to enjoy the blue holes is from the surface--they can be up to 200 feet across, and appear like apparitions in the landscape.

The waters of The Bahamas yield incredible 30m visibility, coral that grows a bit larger and marine life that is slightly more abundant than elsewhere in the already-teeming Caribbean Sea. Coral formations reveal their hypnotic shapes and colors, from fantastic coral canyons to delicate scarlet fans and latticework. The diving tends to improve the farther one goes into the Outer Islands, and Andros is a particularly fine dive destination. Off the coast of the Abacos and Eleuthera, there are not only shipwrecks but also the rarest of undersea ruins-train wrecks.

All diving takes place in the stunning un-commercial waters near the camp, meaning volunteers work within undisturbed marine habitats creating some of the best dive opportunities in the world.

Community Projects

If relaxing on the beach is also your thing then you will have ample time to do this too, the weekends are normally your own and there is scheduled camp transport to take you to the outstanding golden beach that lines the Kenya’s south coast. Diani Beach is a great spot and with plenty of beach bars and restaurants to choose from, there is always a great social element to your trip.
