Overview
Our 'Camp Kenya' programmes have been carefully designed to incorporate community projects and scuba diving in Kenya. The programmes range from 6 to 8 weeks in duration and allow individuals to actively get involved on a wide range of community initiatives and do a variety of PADI courses from Open Water to Rescue Diver during their stay.
Community Work
The community part of the project is run by Camp Kenya - which just happens to be where you stay as well. It was established in partnership with African communities and they continue to fund ongoing projects and sustainable development everywhere they operate. They have been shortlisted 3 years running for the World Responsible Travel Awards. You can expect to spend some of your stay working on a wide range of initiatives where you really will get out what you put in; for example, at the Muhaka Primary School your day-to-day work may range from classroom refurbishment, construction and building desks to teaching and re-plantation projects.
The Diving
We offer a wide range of recreational diving courses as well as some very exiting optional water sports activities.
Depending on which option you choose, both cover the fundamentals of diving and provide you with the opportunity to carry out the Open Water and Advanced Open Water Courses. If you stay for longer, you also learn more advanced diving procedures and skills through the PADI EFR and Rescue Diver Courses.
Aside from the diver training, some 14 to 20 recreational dives are included in each programme so you can practice your new skills in the stunning Indian Ocean environment...which just happens to be on your doorstep!
Activities and Conservation Element
Working Safari - Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary
During your stay you will have the opportunity to work with one of the main wildlife projects based at The Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary. Mwaluganje is one of the most amazing locations you will visit during your stay in Kenya. It reputedly has the densest population of elephants per square mile for anywhere worldwide and they are fortunate enough to operate a mobile camp there for the working safaris. You will typically spend 4-5 days at Mwaluganje and the focus is to develop wildlife initiatives, which benefit the local communities and in turn the elephants and wildlife as a whole.
Big Game Safari
Safari is the Swahili word for journey and no visit to Africa is truly complete without one. There are very few experiences that rival a journey through the wilderness, watching wild animals in their natural habitat. It's rough, it's dusty and it's everything you could want from a real Safari!
