Career Breaks

Two types of career break

There are two types of people who take a career break. The first type are "Career Breakers" (now referred to as CB's). CB's are those that decide to do something different for a given period of time (from a month to maybe one or two years) before returning to work. It might be a sabattical, a period of unemployment or a break in-between jobs. CB's use this time to travel and focus on personal development and/or professional development.

The other type are known as "Career Changers" and are different to career breakers as they have no desire to go back to the same job. These people have decided to do something completely different and take a new direction in life. This normally involves re-training at a professional level.

Who takes a career break with GYD?

We tend to get people aged between 25 and 35. About 50% are 'career changers'. These people normally join us in Egypt on one of our Instructor traineeships as they want a new career as a diving instructor. The other 50% are 'career breakers'. These people join us for anywhere between 2 weeks to a couple of months. Marine conservation, languages and diving as well as short 3-week learn to dive programmes tend to be very popular options.

What can we do for you?

If you're after a professional qualification and you're interested in maybe changing your career (either permanently or just for a short period of time), our Instructor traineeships in Dahab, Egypt are very popluar. The traineeships are designed to educate and train people to high professional standards so that they can find work as a dive instructor around the world. This option is great if your looking for a vocational toolkit to take with you whilst travelling or if you're looking for a new exciting career.

You may just want to learn to dive? Our learn-to-dive programmes in Egypt are also popular with career breakers. These programmes are affordable and offer a nice combination between learning something new, cultural experiences and adventure.

You can also do various levels of diver training from beginner to Divemaster with marine conservation. Our Marine Conservation programmes continue to grow in popularity for our career breakers. With flexible durations and start dates as well as diving courses for beginners; these projects allow individuals to do something a little quirky and different during their career break.
